Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village vs. Zhaoxing Dong Village: Which One Should You Visit?
Ms. Zhang's family of four from the U.S. visited China for summer vacation, spending 4 days in Guizhou. Before the trip, she asked: "Xijiang is packed with crowds; Zhaoxing feels too commercialized. Which should we choose?" We recommended visiting both. After returning, she shared her feedback: "Glad we followed your suggested order."
Qianxinan features two iconic villages—one Miao, one Dong. Overseas Chinese visiting Guizhou often struggle to choose between them. With 10 years of tour experience, Meitu clarifies the differences in this guide.

First, the most obvious differences
Xijiang Thousand Households Miao Village is located in Leishan County. Take a high-speed train from Guiyang to Kaili South (2 hours), then transfer for 40 minutes, or charter a car for 3 hours. Admission is 90 yuan, which includes 4 shuttle rides. Over 1400 stilt houses are stacked across the entire hillside, making it China's largest Miao village. The night illumination is truly breathtaking—the phrase "stars scattered across the mountain" isn't just poetic fluff.
Zhaoxing Dong Village is located in Liping County, near Guangxi. It takes 4 hours and a half from Guiyang via high-speed rail plus shuttle service, or 5 hours by private car. The ticket price of 110 yuan includes access to Tang'an. The main village has about 800 households, with five drum towers as its core landmarks. The atmosphere is noticeably quieter, and visitor numbers are about one-third of those at Xijiang.
Xijiang is impressive, lively, and great for photos; Zhaoxing offers tranquility, culture, and comfortable stays.
The degree of commercialization is the biggest difference.
Commercialization in Xijiang is intense. The main street is lined with silver jewelry shops, sour soup fish restaurants, and influencer hotspots. Before 9 PM, the foot traffic density on the main street rivals that of Sanlitun on weekends.
MeituShuo ReminderIf you find Xijiang too commercialized, stay further up the mountain. The "Dongyin Village" homestay area above the viewing platform retains the authentic old village charm, with rooms ranging from 350 to 600 per night. Waking up to a view of thousands of stilt houses right from your window is an experience that budget hotels on the main street, priced at 150, simply can't offer.
Zhaxing Main Village is also under development, but at a much slower pace. After the grand chorus performance ends at 8 PM, the streets fall quiet.
Pitfall 1: Both Xijiang and Zhaoxing offer "bonfire parties + door-blocking wine" performances. These are commercial shows with an extra fee of 50 to 80 yuan per person. For authentic culture, visit the Dong Grand Song Heritage Center in Zhaoxing (afternoon show at 4 PM). It's free, features local villagers rehearsing spontaneously, and offers a more genuine experience than commercial shows.
Photography and user experience each have their own focus.
Pitfall #2: The best photo spots in Xijiang are concentrated at Viewing Platform 1 and the Wind-and-Rain Bridge. Harsh midday lighting creates high contrast and muddy colors. For the best shots, visit during the blue hour at night.
The drum towers of Zhaoxing are perfect for daytime photography. The five towers feature distinct designs, and the morning side light accentuates the intricate layers of their wooden structures, making them ideal for photos. With the Tang'an Rice Terraces in the background, you can capture two different scenes in a single day.
Experience: Xijiang is great for sightseeing, buying silver jewelry, and enjoying a Miao long-table banquet (average 150 yuan per person, minimum 10 people). Zhaoxing is perfect for sipping oil tea (15 yuan per bowl), listening to elders share the legacy of grand songs, and soaking in a slower pace.
So, how exactly do you choose?
Recommendations by guest type:
First time in Guizhou, with 3 to 4 days? Choose Xijiang. It offers the best scale, impact, and accessibility for first-time visitors.
Take your parents or want a quiet 2-night stay? Choose Zhaoxing. It's peaceful at night, you can sleep in until you wake naturally in the morning, and the Tang'an rice terraces offer a lovely walk.
Photography enthusiasts, 5+ days: Visit both. Xijiang for night views; Zhaoxing for morning light and culture—complementary experiences.
Family (children 7+): Xijiang is preferred. Silverware workshops, stilt house tours, and Miao embroidery classes are available. Zhaoxing tends to be more static for kids and may feel dull.
I want to visit both. How should I schedule them?
MeituShuo ReminderOrder: Xijiang first, then Zhaoxing—not the other way around. Starting with Xijjiang immerses you in the lively atmosphere; arriving at Zhaoxing afterward feels like discovering a "true traditional village." If you go to Zhaoxing first, Xijiang will only feel too noisy. We've confirmed this pattern after guiding hundreds of groups.
Private Transfer: Xijiang to Zhaoxing via mountain roads takes 4 hours. You can add Tang'an Rice Terraces or Bashao Miao Village in Congjiang along the way. Off-season rates: 5-seat SUV for 700 per day, 7-seat business van for 800 per day (includes driver, fuel, and tolls). For overseas Chinese families of 6 to 8 people, the 7-seat vehicle offers the most comfort.
Final thoughts
Difficulty choosing comes from not knowing what you truly want. Want drama, crowds, and night views? Head to Xijiang. Prefer quiet, culture, and a slower pace? Choose Zhaoxing. Share your budget and trip length, and we'll tailor an itinerary based on your preferences.
