Why do most overseas Chinese skip Chishui?

When overseas Chinese visit Guizhou, eight out of ten head straight to Huangguoshu Falls, and the remaining two go to Libo and Xiaoqikong. Chishui gets skipped—not because it's lacking in quality, but because it's far away: a 4.5-hour drive from Guiyang makes many people turn back at the thought.

But if you're willing to give it two extra days, Chishui will reveal a completely different Guizhou. A lady from Kuala Lumpur told me on the return bus: "You should have told us two years ago—Chishui's waterfalls are even more breathtaking than Huangguoshu."

The highlight of Chishui isn't a single attraction, but its layered landscapes: waterfalls cascade down red cliffs, bamboo seas flourish beneath them, and ancient towns nestle within the greenery—all in one breathtaking scene. This is a far cry from the pure waterfall experience at Huangguoshu.

How should I plan the route for the four key attractions?

Day 1: Chishui Grand Waterfall (Shizhidong)

A drop of 76 meters and a width of 80 meters, making it second only to Huangguoshu in scale. Yet the style is entirely different: at Huangguoshu, you stand inside the viewing cave enveloped by water, while Chishui Grand Waterfall offers a frontal view of white water cascading down an entire red cliff face, creating a striking contrast between the red rock and the white water.

  • The trail from the scenic entrance to the viewing platform is approximately 2 km and not tiring.

  • Mist from the viewing platform waterfall can drift 30-40 meters; bring a light jacket or raincoat.

  • Tickets: 80 CNY during peak season, 50 CNY during off-peak season; shuttle bus: 20 CNY

MeituShuo ReminderWater flow is strongest and sunlight angle optimal from 10 AM to 2 PM, offering the best contrast between the Red Rock and White Water for photography. After 3 PM, the front-facing view becomes backlit, resulting in darker images.

Day 2: Foguang Rock + Bamboo Sea

Foguang Rock is a "rock-viewing" site. The entire curved red cliff spans over 300 meters in height and 1000 meters in length, with a waterfall cascading straight down from the top to the valley floor. Standing on the viewing platform and looking up, the wall appears to lean toward you—an optical illusion created by the curved cliff face that evokes a sense of visual pressure.

  • The tour is a loop route and takes 2-3 hours in total. There are quite a few steps.

  • Tickets: 80 yuan, Shuttle bus: 20 yuan

  • Visit on a weekday morning; you're likely to have the entire trail to yourselves.

Avoid These PitfallsThe Foguang Rock Trail is extremely slippery after rain, especially the lower section near the waterfall where stone steps are covered with a permanent water film. If hiking with seniors, wear non-slip shoes. Grass sandals are sold at the scenic area entrance for 10 per pair; they offer much better traction than sneakers.

Afternoon transfer to Chishui Zhuhai National Forest Park. The bamboo forest here is unique for growing on Danxia landforms. Don't miss the Observation Tower: from the summit, you'll see endless waves of green bamboo bending in unison with the wind, like a rolling sea.

  • Tickets: 30, Shuttle bus: 20. The tour takes about 1.5 hours.

  • Recommended to visit after Fuguang Rock: view Hongyan first, then the bamboo forest for a visually rhythmic experience.

Day 3: Bing'an Ancient Town + Return Trip

Bing'an is a 30-minute drive east of Chishui City, built on a massive boulder by the Chishui River. Stilt houses stack up the mountainside. Compared to Qingyan and Zhenyuan, Bing'an is far less commercialized: the street vendors serve local dishes like tofu pudding rice and yellow rice cakes, not stalls packed with Yiwu trinkets.

  • Ticket: 20 yuan. Allow 30 minutes to 1 hour for the visit.

MeituShuo ReminderThe best time to visit Bing'an is between 4 and 6 PM, when tour groups have mostly left. At sunset, the golden light hits the Chishui River and the wooden walls of the stilt houses, creating the most beautiful view along the entire street.

Avoid common pitfalls in transportation and accommodation

Pitfall #1: There is no high-speed rail station in Chishui. The nearest high-speed rail station is in Zunyi; it takes 2.5 hours by car from Zunyi to Chishui, and 4.5 hours from Guiyang to Chishui via expressway and provincial roads. There is no public transportation between attractions (distances vary from 15 to 50 km). Independent travelers must rely on taxis or chartered cars—hailing rides between sites is difficult and often costs more than booking a charter.

Mistake 2: The hotel quality is far below that of Guiyang.Accommodations near the scenic area are limited to basic country-style lodges. We recommend staying in Chishui City and driving to the attractions daily; the longest one-way trip is 40 minutes. Ignore online recommendations claiming you can "stay inside the scenic area"—the conditions often fall short of expectations.

Car Rental Cost Estimate

  • One-way trip from Guiyang to Chishui is 300 km; a 5-seater vehicle costs approximately 1200-1500 yuan.

  • One-day tour of Chishui's local attractions (Grand Waterfall + Buddha Light Rock + Bamboo Forest), 5-seat shuttle: 600-800 CNY including waiting time; 7-seat business van: 800-1000 CNY.

  • Round-trip transfer from Zunyi High-Speed Rail Station to Chishui with 2-day sightseeing pickups, 5-seater vehicle approx. 2000-2500 CNY.

FAQ

Q: Can you visit all three attractions in Chishui in one day?

Answer: The Grand Waterfall takes half a day, Fuguang Rock 2-3 hours, and Bamboo Sea 1.5 hours. It's theoretically possible to complete all three in one day, but it will be exhausting and you'll only get a superficial view of each site. We recommend splitting it over at least two days: Day 1 for the Grand Waterfall, and Day 2 for Fuguang Rock and Bamboo Sea. Bing'an Ancient Town requires half a day and is best visited on your return journey.

Q: How long does it take to travel from Huangguoshu to Chishui?

Answer: Driving from Huangguoshu to Chishui takes about 3.5 hours on the highway. If you only have 4-5 days, here's a suggested itinerary: Day 1 – Explore Chishui (Waterfall, Fuguang Rock, Bamboo Sea), Day 3 – Return to Huangguoshu, Day 4 – Visit Libo or Xiaoqikong. This route covers Guizhou's most iconic waterfalls, Danxia landforms, and scenic water spots.
