This past August, I picked up Mr. Lin and his family of four from California at Guiyang Airport. He brought his wife and two children to visit relatives and enjoy a trip. Before departing, he sent me a long list of questions: How far are the attractions in Guizhou? Will the kids handle the car rides? Are the mountain roads likely to cause motion sickness? What if we need to change the itinerary?

Almost every overseas Chinese family asks this question. Here's a recap of the trip.

Needs of a family of four

Mr. Lin last visited Guizhou over a decade ago, back when he didn't have children. This time, traveling with two kids, he wanted to avoid rushed group tours and also steer clear of driving himself on mountain roads. After searching for "Guizhou private tour" online, he found our detailed itineraries and reached out to our customer service representative, Xiao Ran.

Typical requirements: no rush to hit tourist spots, short daily drives, space for kids to run around, hotel rooms accommodating a family of four, and a steady driver.

Two Days of Thrills: Zhijin Cave and Wumeng Grassland for Kids

Zijin Cave entrance fee: 120 CNY. A full tour takes about 1.5 hours. The cave maintains a constant temperature of around 10–20°C, making it especially cool in summer.MeituShuo ReminderThe cave floor is wet and dimly lit. Please hold children's hands, wear non-slip shoes, and avoid sandals or clog-style shoes.

The next day, we visited Wumeng Grassland at an elevation of over 2,000 meters. In August, the meadows were still lush green, and the children ran across the vast grassy slopes all afternoon.

MeituShuo ReminderThe grasslands are at high altitude with strong winds. Temperatures can drop by 10°C between morning and evening, so bring a jacket to layer over your short sleeves—don't assume it won't get cold in summer.

Huangguoshu and Xiaoqikong: Don't miss either.

Huangguoshu Waterfall entrance fee: 270 CNY, includes access to the Water Curtain Cave.Avoid These PitfallsPeak season tickets must be booked online at least one week in advance; waiting in line on-site can take over an hour.

Xiaoqikong entrance fee: 170 yuan. The Water Forest requires walking through water.Avoid These PitfallsThe rocks in the water forest are covered with moss and extremely slippery. Even regular sneakers can lose traction, so waterproof hiking shoes with good grip are recommended. Do not let children wear sandals.

Pingtang FAST: The Children's Quietest Day

On day six, we visited the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Telescope (FAST) in Pingtang. The observation deck doesn't allow phones or cameras; all electronic devices must be stored. My 10-year-old son, who usually can't sit still, stood quietly for over half an hour that day. Only after getting back in the car did he say, "It's much bigger than I imagined."

Handling Last-Minute Itinerary Changes

Originally, D9 was scheduled to go directly from Xijiang to Guiyang for airport drop-off. The day before departure, Mrs. Lin requested a lunch stop at Qingyan Ancient Town for the child. Xiao Ran rearranged the itinerary that evening, advancing the start time and making a half-day stop at Qingyan along the way, ensuring no delay to the afternoon flight.

Car Rental Cost Estimate

This 9-day loop tour offers a comfortable private car for 7 passengers, costing approximately 8000 to 9500 yuan. The fee includes fuel, tolls, parking, and the driver's meals and accommodation. Admission tickets for four people total just over 4000 yuan. Accommodation is calculated based on two rooms per night, ranging from 600 to 900 yuan.

For families booking a Guizhou car charter service, we recommend pricing by the day. This offers flexibility to add stops or adjust the itinerary mid-trip—the key advantage of a Guizhou family tour. There are no hidden fees; all costs are clearly outlined in writing before departure.

FAQ

Q: How many days are recommended for a trip to Guizhou with two children?

Answer: We recommend 7 to 9 days. Fewer than 7 days will make travel between attractions exhausting; around 9 days allows you to visit Huangguoshu, Xiaoqikong, Miao Village, and the grasslands at a comfortable pace.

Q: Is the chartered vehicle fee a fixed price for the entire trip?

Answer: Charge is based on daily rates. Clearly state the total price and inclusions before departure; no price increases during the trip. If you wish to add extra attractions mid-trip, simply pay the daily rate difference.
