Last week, I received a message from Mr. Chen in Singapore: "Could you help me ask about visas for my American friends? They immigrated from China over a decade ago and heard there's now visa-free access, but I'm not sure which category they fall under."

We answer this question dozens of times a year. Overseas Chinese identities vary widely, making visa policies confusing. Today, we break it down by three categories: "Holders of Foreign Passports," "Holders of Travel Permits for Hong Kong and Macao Residents," and "Holders of Taiwan Compatriot Passports." We'll focus on the most common pitfalls in the 240-hour transit-without-visa policy.

Three identities, three ways to enter

Holders of foreign passports (who have acquired U.S., Canadian, or Malaysian citizenship)

Is the passport-issuing country on the 30-day visa-exemption list? Ordinary passports from Malaysia and Singapore are exempt from visa requirements for tourism purposes in China for up to 30 days, with a cumulative stay not exceeding 90 days within any 180-day period. U.S. passports are not included in the visa-exemption list; travelers must obtain a visa (L visa for tourism, Q visa for family visits) or utilize the 240-hour transit visa exemption (details below).

Passport valid for at least 6 months, blank visa pages, round-trip flight itinerary, and hotel reservation. Former Chinese citizens must submit their original Chinese passport for the first visa application.

Hold Mainland Travel Permit (Hong Kong/Macau) / Taiwan Travel Permit (Taiwan)

Mainland entry for HK/MAC residents with Travel Permits has no stay limit; simply present the card at the port. Taiwan residents with Entry Permits can make multiple round trips, flying directly from Taoyuan or Kaohsiung to Guiyang, or transiting via Hong Kong or Macau. Both groups must ensure their travel documents remain valid throughout the trip; renew expired documents at least 7 business days in advance to avoid last-minute issues. Use the same document for hotel registration and real-name verification at scenic spots.

MeituShuo ReminderFriends who were formerly Chinese citizens but have acquired foreign nationality must present their original Chinese passport when applying for a Chinese visa for the first time. We've encountered two cases where guests lost their old passports, resulting in visa rejections and ruined itineraries. If your old passport is missing, you can obtain a cancellation certificate from the police station of your former household registration (hukou), but this process can take a long time. Be sure to confirm everything before departure.

240-hour visa-free transit: Most popular lane for travelers from the US, Singapore, and Malaysia

Starting from 12 of 2024, China has implemented a 240-hour (10-day) visa-free transit policy for nationals of 57. Guiyang Longdongbao Airport is one of the 65 designated ports (according toNational Immigration AdministrationValid for stays across provinces. Passports from the United States, Singapore, and Malaysia are included in the list.

However, there is a strict prerequisite:Must hold a connecting flight ticket to a third country/regionThe entry and exit countries cannot be the same.

For example: USA → Guiyang → Thailand counts as a transit and is valid; Singapore → Guiyang → Singapore does not qualify because the entry and exit points are the same. Many travelers get stuck here, mistakenly believing they can enter visa-free just by being overseas, only to be denied boarding by the airline when purchasing round-trip tickets.

Avoid These Pitfalls240 hours visa-free entry requires a printed connecting itinerary; border control does not accept phone screenshots. We once had a U.S. group with tickets only in the app, and they were sent to a print shop for 30 minutes on-site. Before departure, always print your onward flight tickets and hotel confirmations and keep them in your passport holder for the smoothest experience.

Avoid These PitfallsTravelers holding Hong Kong or Macao SAR passports use the 30-day visa-free lane and do not need to go through the 240-hour transit process. These two policies are often confused; check your passport type before booking your flight.

Typical 7-day itinerary for international guests visiting Guizhou

Fly into Guiyang. Spend the first two days acclimating in the city: visit Qingyun Market for Siwawa, try Huaguoyuan's Laoguo hot pot, and savor Aunt Zhang's braised pork at Qingyan Ancient Town. Day 3: Huangguoshu Waterfall—explore Doupotang, Tianxingqiao, and the Water Curtain Cave. Day 4: Head to Xijiang Miao Village; enjoy the night view of thousands of lights from the observation deck. Day 5: Zhenyuan Ancient Town—lunch by the Wuyang River, then climb Shiping Mountain at dusk. Day 6: Fanjingshan—take the cable car up to the Red Cloud Golden Summit. Day 7: Visit Jiaxiu Pavilion, then fly out to a third country in the evening.

Time is tight; skip Fanjingshan. Compress the trip to 5 days: one day for Huangguoshu Waterfall and one day for the Miao Village.

MeituShuo ReminderIt takes 10 minutes by subway from Longdongbao Airport to the city center, but public transport to Xijiang, Zhenyuan, and Fanjingshan is infrequent—lugging luggage through multiple transfers can be exhausting. For international guests, we include a private car with a driver as standard: 5-seater SUVs from 600 to 800 per day, or 7-seat business vans from 800 to 1000. Our drivers are experienced in mountain roads and can act as half-guide.

Visa and entry: Have your documents, connecting tickets, and printed materials ready. Once you land in Guizhou, it's all about fun. Leave the itinerary, private car service, and hotel bookings to us.
