Guizhou Photography Tour: How to plan the 6-day light-chasing route in Qiandongnan Miao Villages
Mr. Chen, a landscape photographer from Singapore, visited Guizhou for the first time at the end of 6. Before departing, he sent me a photo of Jiabang Terraced Fields and asked: "Can I still capture those emerald-green rice field reflections now?" I said yes, but it depends on whether you're willing to wake up at 4 AM. Over 6 days, he captured more than 2000 shots. Upon returning, he sent me this message: "This trip was absolutely worth it."
Many photography enthusiasts from the US, Singapore, and Malaysia have recently asked about Guizhou itineraries. Meitu has been running photography tours for 10 years. Let's clearly explain this 6-day light-chasing route.
6-Day Overview
Day 1: Guiyang to Xijiang Miao Village, approximately 3 hours by car
Day 2: Dawn mist at Xijiang sunrise, Longde Upper Village in the afternoon.
Day 3: Drive from Xijiang to Jiabang Rice Terraces, approximately 5 hours.
D4: Sunrise and Sunset at Jiabang Terraces
Day 5: Drive to Zhaoxing Dong Village (approx. 3 hours)
D6: Return to Guiyang after sunrise at Datang'an; drive time approximately 5 hours.
Focus on just two core areas: Miao villages and Dong ethnic villages in Qiandongnan, with a cross through the Jiabang Rice Terraces. Don't try to cover too much; aim for deep, thorough photography instead.

Days 1–2: Xijiang – Night views followed by morning mist
Take the Shang-Xia Expressway from Guiyang to Xijiang in 3 hours. Arrive in the afternoon and scout the viewpoint first.
MeituShuo ReminderThere are two observation decks. Most tourists crowd at Deck 1, but Deck 2 offers better shots with a layered, depth-filled view of the stilt houses. The lights turn on from 7:30 PM to 10 AM. The blue hour occurs around 7:25, so set up your camera in advance.
Wake up at 4 AM the next day to capture morning mist. The highest probability of fog occurs the morning after rain; in dry weather, the chance is less than 30%. Don't pin all your hopes on this single day for a shot of morning mist.
Head down the mountain in the morning to Langde Shangzhai. No entrance fee here (Xijiang charges 90 yuan). The village preserves authentic stilt-house architecture, sees fewer tourists, and is ideal for cultural photography.

Day 3 to Day 4: Jiabang Rice Terraces – Morning mist is the highlight
It takes about 5 hours by mountain road from Xijiang to Jiabang. Depart at noon and arrive in the evening; check the light direction first. The best photo spots are in Dangniu Village and Jiache Village. Stay at farmhouses along the terraced fields, with standard rooms priced between 150 and 250 yuan per night.
MeituShuo Reminder: The 7 month ranking is emerald green, not golden yellow (the golden period is from late 9 to early 10). However, the emerald phase has its advantages. Right after rice seedlings are transplanted, some fields still reflect light, and combined with morning mist, it offers better photo opportunities than the golden season. If you're determined to see the golden hues, come back around National Day.
Head to Dang Niu Village at 5 AM for sunrise and sea of clouds from the high point. In the evening, head down to Jia Che Village to capture the golden hour side light on the terraced fields. Two days is enough to fully capture the scene.
Heads-up: There are no convenience stores or food delivery in this area. Stock up on water and snacks in the county town beforehand. The best photo spots on the mountain require waiting for up to two hours.
Day 5 to Day 6: Zhaoxing to Tang'an
The mountain drive from Jia Bang to Zhao Xing takes about 3 hours. Zhao Xing is one of China's largest Dong villages, with its five drum towers as the main attraction. Admission is 110 CNY (includes Tang'an).
The main village is great for cultural shots. Evening performances of Dong Grand Chorus are available, though they feel staged with heavy lighting. The real photo-worthy spot is Tang'an Dong Village. It's a 20-minute drive up the mountain. The entire village is built on the hillside, with rows of wooden houses stacked one above another—perfect for capturing morning light.
MeituShuo ReminderThe sunrise viewing spot at Tang'an is located 300 meters up the mountain road from the village entrance. Scout the area one day in advance and start hiking in the dark by 5 o'clock the next morning. There are no streetlights, so wear non-slip shoes and bring a headlamp.
Day 6 morning: After shooting the sunrise, we took the Lanhai Expressway back to Guiyang and arrived in 5 hours.
How do I arrange a private car?
Photography tours recommend the 7-seat Buick GL8 or Toyota Sienna. With ample gear storage, the rear seats can be folded down for temporary sleeping quarters when the group is small. Private vehicle rental for 6 days costs 1300 to 1500 per day, including driver accommodation and meals, fuel, and tolls.
Group of 2 to 3 people in a 5-seat business van for just 1000 to 1200 per day. Choose a driver who's also a photographer—we have two experienced drivers who are camera enthusiasts and know the best spots, times, and angles for stunning photos.
Final thoughts
Success in this field ultimately depends on getting up early. The best shots are captured during the hour before sunrise and the half-hour after sunset. At Meitu, we ensure your travel time, accommodation, and shooting locations are perfectly aligned with these prime windows. For a customized photography itinerary in Guizhou, send us a few reference photos and tell us your style.
