Guizhou Group Tour vs. Private Custom Tour: Which Should You Choose?
Last Wednesday, Mr. Chen from Singapore and his family of four came to us and asked straight away: "What's the real difference between group tours and private tours? Are the 2–8 person small groups advertised online just big buses with a new name?"
To be honest, we get asked this question at least three times a week. Guizhou tour routes are long and attractions are scattered; choosing the wrong tour type can significantly impact your experience. Since we offer both types, let's break down the differences so you can pick the one that fits your needs.
Pin Xiaotuan: Affordable basics that save you money and worry
Pin Xiaotuan means 2 to 8 people sharing a vehicle and following the same route. Our most popular option is the 2-day classic tour covering Huangguoshu Waterfall, Xiaoqikong Scenic Area, and Xijiang Miao Village, with departures every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.
Price: High season (months 7–8 and National Day): ¥3580 to ¥3980 per person; Low season: ¥2980 to ¥3280. Includes 6 days/7 nights at a 4-star hotel, transportation, admission tickets, guide service, and 4 breakfasts. Does not include round-trip travel or main meals.
The biggest advantage of Pin Xiaotuan is the low cost. For the same 5-day itinerary, a private custom tour costs at least 40% more. Another benefit is that you don't have to worry about anything; your itinerary, hotel, and tickets are all arranged—you just show up and follow along.

MeituShuo Reminder: For Xiaotuan tours, always clarify the minimum group size. Some travel agencies advertise starting from 2 people, but if only 2 show up, they may cancel or postpone. At Meitu Tours, our groups are guaranteed to depart with a minimum of 2 participants—we won't cancel just because you have fewer travelers.
Avoid These PitfallsDon't be fooled by "6 people premium small group" ads. Many platforms label mid-sized vans as "small groups," with 15 to 20 passengers per vehicle, leaving you waiting in line for your guide at attractions. A true shared small tour requires a business-class van with no more than 7 seats and 8 passengers total. Before booking, ask the provider to send the exact vehicle model for confirmation.
Private Customization: Your Itinerary, Your Way
Private customization means you get your own vehicle and driver, with an itinerary tailored to your needs. Stay longer at attractions you love and skip the ones you don't want to visit.
Example for a family of four over 5 days: 1 business van (Buick GL8 or equivalent) with driver, fuel, and tolls included. Daily cost is 1200 to 1500, totaling 5 days at 6000 to 7500. Accommodation is self-paid; we can book it at our partner rates—4-star hotels range from 300 to 500 per night. Admission tickets are self-paid, same as group tour prices.
Total cost for a family of four over 5 days is approximately 1.5 to 2 thousand, or 4000 to 5000 per person—30% to 50% more than small-group tours.
What makes it premium? The car is yours, your schedule is flexible, and the driver serves only your group. Traveling through Guizhou with elderly family members and children means you won't have to wake up at 7 AM to rush for an itinerary. Private customization is the better choice.
MeituShuo ReminderPrivate customization doesn't mean exorbitant pricing. For groups of 4 or fewer, a 7-seater business van offers the best value; one vehicle for 5 to 8 people keeps per-person costs low. Only when your group exceeds 8 should you switch to a 15-seater minibus, which will increase the fare.
How to choose: 3 criteria
First, consider group size. For 1 to 2 travelers, join a small group tour for the best value—the savings can cover several extra nice meals. For groups of 4 or more, opt for a private customized tour; while the per-person cost is similar, you'll gain significantly more flexibility.
Second, consider your travel companions. If you're bringing elderly travelers (especially those over 60 years old) or children under 3, we strongly recommend a private customized tour. Small group tours follow a fixed schedule: departure at 7 AM and lunch at 12 PM, which can be exhausting for seniors and young kids. With a private tour, you can stop whenever needed to rest and adjust meal times on the fly.
Third, consider the trip duration. For trips of 3 days or less, small group tours are sufficient. For itineraries exceeding 5 days—especially those involving inter-provincial travel or in-depth exploration of Qiandongnan—a private custom tour offers distinct advantages. Longer routes involve more variables, such as weather conditions, physical stamina, and spontaneous changes of plan, all of which require flexible adjustments.

Avoid These PitfallsDon't just compare total prices. Small group tours often exclude meals and some attraction tickets, meaning you may pay extra once you arrive in Guizhou. Private custom tours include transport, accommodation, and entry fees for a transparent all-inclusive price. When comparing costs, always ask the provider to clearly list what is included and excluded before making your decision.
