One-Day vs. Two-Day Trip to Fanjingshan: Which Itinerary Is Best?

Last week, Mr. Chen's family from Singapore flew to Guizhou and wanted to climb Mount Fanjing on their first day. Upon landing, he messaged me: "Xiaotu, what if the tickets are sold out?"

We handle dozens of such inquiries annually. With a decade of experience as a local ground handler in Guizhou and having led hundreds of tours to Mount Fanjing, we'll clearly break down the one-day versus two-day itineraries today.

Understand the rules of Fanjingshan first.

Daily limit: 9000 tickets. Online sales in three rounds: 7 days prior (2000), 3 days prior (3000), and morning of the day (800). High season sells out fast. East Gate (Jiangkou County, Heiwan River) and West Gate (Yinjiang Huguosi) are 70 km apart; tickets are not interchangeable. 90% of visitors choose the East Gate, which has a cable car taking 15 minutes to the summit. The West Gate is hiking only, with a minimum ascent time of 4 hours. East Gate hours: 6:30 to 15:00. West Gate closes at 13:00.

One-day tour: Complete the highlights in 5-6 hours

The high-speed train from Guiyang to Tongren takes 1 hours and 40 minutes, with second-class seats costing 147. The direct bus from Tongren to Dongmen takes 1.5 hours and costs 35. Since buses are infrequent, we recommend staying overnight in Tongren or Jiangkou the night before.

Arrive at the park by 6:30. Take the sightseeing bus to the cable car lower station (2-way fare: 20 yuan, mandatory; travel time: 48 minutes). Ride the cable car up the mountain (2-way fare: 15 yuan; travel time: 140 minutes). Walk for 10 minutes to Putuo Square. First thing upon arrival: scan the QR code to book a visit to Hongyun Golden Summit.

Finish your booking, then visit Mushroom Rock (best light in the morning), followed by a hike to Old Golden Summit (round trip 1.5 hours, elevation 2494 meters). Climb Hongyun Golden Summit using the chain path (approx. 1 hours). Take the cable car and sightseeing bus down; total duration is 5 to 6 hours.

Cost: Ticket 100 + Round-trip Shuttle Bus 48 + Round-trip Cable Car 140 = 288 per person.

Heads-up:The climb to Hongyun Jinding is extremely steep, requiring the use of iron chains with both hands and feet. The "One-Thread Sky" passage fits only one person at a time. If you have acrophobia, high blood pressure, or heart conditions, do not attempt this; simply admiring the view from Pudu Square is already breathtaking.

MeituShuo Reminder:It's windy at the summit and 8 to 10 degrees cooler than below. Bring a windbreaker. There are no supplies on the mountain—pack enough hot water and food yourself. Bottled water costs 8 per bottle and may be out of stock.

2-Day Tour: Relax at Your Own Pace, Visit an Extra Golden Summit

Arrive on Day 1 and skip the mountain climb for now. Explore Zhaisha Dong Village (free entry, a Buyi ethnic village with an evening bonfire party). Stay at a homestay east of the city gate. On Day 2, take the 6:30 first cable car ride. The morning light is ideal for capturing the best photos of Mushroom Rock and Hongyun Golden Summit.

Two days offer more than just an extra half-day. You can comfortably visit both the Old Golden Summit and the Red Cloud Golden Summit, take your time at Mushroom Rock and the Ten Thousand Volumes of Scripture, and increase your chances of seeing sea of clouds. From 6:30 to 8:00, morning mist often rises from the valleys—a breathtaking scene that no phone camera can capture.

Accommodation: A short walk from Zhaisha Dong Village to the scenic area entrance; budget-friendly options in Jiangkou County. During peak seasons and weekends, homestays east of the city gate are often fully booked—reserve at least one week in advance.

Heads-up:Restrooms at the mountain summit: 3 total, with 2 currently out of water. Bring plenty of wet wipes and tissues, and fill your thermos before you start the hike.

Charter a car or take a ride?

Tongren Station to Fanjing Mountain East Gate takes 1.5 hours. Sedans cost 300 per day with 5 seats; business vans cost 500 per day with 7 seats. Chartering a vehicle for 5 or more people is more economical than ride-hailing, and the driver can also help monitor ticket release times. If departing from Guiyang, take the high-speed rail to Tongren first, then charter a car for the most seamless journey—direct highway travel takes 4.5 hours.

Say a few words

One day is enough for Mount Fanjing if you're in a hurry: book tickets early, enter via the East Gate, and reserve the Golden Summit slot immediately upon arrival. For a relaxed experience, take two days to visit the Old Golden Summit and increase your chances of seeing sea of clouds. Overseas travelers can fly into/out of Guiyang; add a round-trip high-speed train to Tongren plus one overnight stay, then seamlessly connect with the Miao and Dong villages in Southeast Guizhou.
