Zhenyuan Ancient Town Travel Guide: A Thousand-Year-Old Gem in Guizhou Worth Two Days for Overseas Chinese

Last month, Ms. Lin, who returned from Singapore to visit family, contacted us and mentioned she'd like to stop by Guizhou along the way. She initially planned to spend just one day in Zhenyuan, thinking, "It's just an ancient town; a quick walk around should be enough." But once there, she realized one day wasn't nearly enough—the Wuyang River boat ride was still pending, Qinglong Cave hadn't been fully explored, and Mount Shiping remained unclimbed—all before the day ended. Later, she messaged me on WeChat: "Xiao Tu, why didn't you tell me sooner? I almost wasted the trip."

To be honest, this is a very common situation. Many overseas Chinese return to China with tight schedules, often squeezing Zhenyuan into the end of their itinerary for just a day before rushing off to the next destination. However, after leading so many tours over the years, we can confidently say that Zhenyuan is truly the most worthwhile ancient city in Guizhou to spend two days exploring—without exception.

What's worth seeing in Zhenyuan?

Zhenyuan has a 228-year history and has been the seat of county government since the Qin Dynasty. It is not an artificial ancient town built for photos, but a living town that has thrived for over two millennia. The Wuyang River winds through the city in an S-shape, dividing it into north and south sections: the former prefectural city on the north bank and the former garrison city on the south bank. Buildings along both banks retain their original appearance.

The most convenient way to travel from Guiyang to Zhenyuan is by high-speed rail. The trip from Guiyang North Station to Zhenyuan Station takes about 1.5 hours, with second-class seats costing around 120. There are frequent daily departures. If driving, take the Shanghai-Kunming Expressway and then the Sijian Expressway; the journey takes 3.5 hours. The ancient town is compact, so you'll mostly walk once you arrive—no need for taxis within the city. The high-speed rail station is only a 10-minute drive from the ancient town. Our Meitu car charter service can arrange pick-up and drop-off for you.

How to plan a two-day itinerary

Day 1: Check in upon arrival this afternoon, then drop your luggage and explore the ancient town. Be sure to walk through Sifang Well Lane and Fuxing Lane—cobblestone streets, old courtyards, and historic wells showcase Zhenyuan's most authentic local charm. For dinner, enjoy sour soup fish by the riverside, followed by an evening stroll along Wuyang River to take in the night views. Many overseas Chinese groups we've hosted have said Zhenyuan's night scene was the most unexpected highlight of their Guizhou trip.

Day 2: Start early to hike Shiping Mountain. The trail from the ancient city takes about 30 minutes to reach the summit, with an entrance fee of 30 yuan. As the highest point north of Zhenyuan's old town, Shiping Mountain offers panoramic views of the entire ancient city and the Wuyang River. We recommend arriving around 6 a.m. to catch the sunrise; at that time, the ancient city is wrapped in mist, and the Wuyang River winds through like a green ribbon—a breathtaking sight. Mr. Chen and his family, who recently returned from the U.S., took their family photo on this mountain during sunrise. They later told us it was the most precious photo of their entire trip.

After descending the mountain, have breakfast, then visit Qinglong Cave in the morning. Perched on the cliffside along the Wuyang River, this ancient architectural complex is one of Guizhou's most spectacular sites. Admission is 60 yuan. The site uniquely blends Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism, showcasing a seamless fusion of central Chinese architecture and the stilted buildings of southeast Guizhou.MeituShuo ReminderQinglong Cave is much less crowded and has softer lighting after 3 PM, making it ideal for photos. If you're on a Guizhou private tour, we typically schedule your visit in the afternoon to avoid morning tour group peaks.

Take the Wuyang River boat tour this afternoon, departing from Zhenyuan Wharf. The journey passes through several gorges including Zhuge Gorge and Huo Gorge, taking approximately 1.5 hours. Tickets cost around 100. The water is a vivid emerald green, with trees on the steep cliffs reflected in it like a painting.

MeituShuo ReminderFor Wuyang River boat tours, we recommend visiting between 9 and 11 for the best lighting and clearest water reflections. After 3 in the afternoon, fog often forms; while atmospheric, it significantly reduces photo quality.

What to eat in Zhenyuan

Three must-try dishes in Zhenyuan: Caidish, Red Sour Soup Fish, and Rice Tofu. Caidish is a unique pickled vegetable from Zhenyuan, made by fermenting locally grown greens; it tastes much fresher than regular sauerkraut and pairs wonderfully with stir-fried meat or fish soup. Red Sour Soup Fish needs no introduction—it's the signature dish of Qiandongnan, featuring rice pond fish simmered in a tangy broth made from fermented local cherry tomatoes for a refreshing sour-spicy kick.

We often recommend guests try "Dao Cai Sour Soup Fish." The dao cai is made from locally grown vegetables in Zhenyuan, offering a milder sourness than Kaili's version. Paired with local rice tofu, you can enjoy a filling meal for just 40 to 50 yuan per person. Last year, Mr. Wang and his family, returning from Singapore, ate dao cai every day for three days in Zhenyuan. After they left, they even asked us to ship them a box.

Shuttle or high-speed train to Zhenyuan?

The high-speed train is the most budget-friendly option, with round-trip tickets under 300 yuan and flexible scheduling. However, if you're traveling with more than 3 people or want to combine a visit to Xijiang Miao Village and Fanjing Mountain along the way, chartering a car offers better value. The drive from Guiyang to Zhenyuan takes approximately 3.5 hours one-way, costing between 1000 and 1200 yuan (including fuel and tolls). Many of our overseas Chinese guests visiting Guizhou opt for a 4- to 5-day itinerary that links Zhenyuan, Xijiang, and Fanjing. With a chartered vehicle, luggage stays onboard without daily packing—ideal for families with elderly members or young children.

Pitfall Alert 1Stay at least one night in Zhenyuan; a single day is not enough. We've seen too many guests schedule Zhenyuan as the last stop with only one day, only to realize upon arrival that even two days aren't sufficient. If you're doing a round trip in one day, you'll have to choose between the Wuyang River cruise and Qinglong Cave, and you'll miss the sunrise at Shiping Mountain—essentially wasting your visit.Warning 2The riverside homestays in the ancient town offer great views, but during peak seasons (summer and National Day), the bar street by the river can get noisy at night. Rooms directly facing the river may stay loud until 11 AM. For a quieter stay with authentic charm, choose an inn deep within the old town's alleys. Always read reviews before booking. We once helped a couple returning from Canada pick a riverside homestay, only to be disturbed all night. They switched to an alley-side inn the next day and reported sleeping much better that second night.
