Immerse Yourself in Guizhou's Ethnic Villages: Stay in Miao and Dong Communities
Last week, Ms. Lin from Singapore messaged me on WeChat: "My husband and I are taking our kids to Guizhou. We don't want to just snap photos at viewpoints and leave; we'd like to stay in a village, share meals with locals, and have real conversations. How should we plan this?" This kind of request has become increasingly common over the past two years. Friends returning from abroad no longer settle for ticking off tourist spots—they want to spend a couple of days truly experiencing the everyday rhythm of Miao and Dong communities.
Here's how to stay and explore a Miao village combined with a Dong village, based on my actual itinerary.

Two nights at Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village
Private car from Guiyang to Xijiang takes about 3.5 hours. Tickets are 90 per person, including 4 shuttle bus rides. We recommend staying in a stilt house homestay within the village; rates range from 200 to 500 per night. Book at least two weeks in advance during peak season.
Stroll along the Baiwater River during the day to explore stilt houses and watch Miao women craft silver ornaments and embroider traditional patterns. The village features two free museums—the Miao Ethnic Museum and the Silver Ornament Museum—worth a one-hour visit with children. The Miao folk dance and music show at 8 PM is included in your ticket, so no extra purchase is needed. On day two, start early for the back mountain terrace trail; the round trip takes about 1 hours. Seeing the stilt houses through morning mist reveals the authentic charm of the Miao village.
MeituShuo Reminder:Shops on the main street sell the same souvenirs found in ancient towns nationwide. For authentic handmade silver and batik, seek out small family-run workshops tucked deep in the alleys. Prices there are half as much as on the main street.

Two nights at Zhaoxing Dong Village
It takes about 3 hours by private car from Xijiang to Zhaoxing. Tickets are 75 yuan per person and include shuttle bus access. Zhaoxing is the largest Dong village in China, featuring a drum tower in each of its 5 districts. No need to rush through attractions—stay within the village, visit a tea house next to a different drum tower each day, and chat with locals about stories of Dong Grand Song.
Dong Grand Chorus, a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage featuring polyphonic unaccompanied singing, is truly breathtaking. Performances take place every afternoon in the village at around 30 yuan per ticket. For a more authentic experience, ask your homestay host to arrange a private performance; some elders sing in their living rooms for free or accept a small red envelope as a token of appreciation.

Stay and explore nearby villages. Tang'an Dong Village is 8 km from Zhaoxing, featuring a Sui altar on the hilltop with panoramic views of the terraces; it's about 2 hours to hike there, or you can book a round-trip car for 50 yuan. Jitang Dong Village is even less visited, with almost no tourists. Elders often sit on stone benches under the drum tower chatting.
MeituShuo Reminder:When booking a homestay, clarify the orientation. Rooms facing the mountains offer morning bird songs and views of cooking smoke, providing a much better experience than those facing the road, often at similar prices.
How should meals be arranged?
Skip the influencer recommendations—ask your homestay host what's fresh today. Suan Tang Yu (sour soup fish) is a Miao specialty: rice-field fish simmered in fermented sour broth. A pot costs 80–120 yuan and serves 3–4 people. Dong ethnic cuisine features pickled fish and sticky rice. The fish is tangy and salty; it may take some getting used to, but it pairs wonderfully with sticky rice.
There's a hidden gem: book the "Long Table Banquet" with your homestay host a day in advance. It features over a dozen dishes served on a long table with rice wine, costing 60 to 80 yuan per person—perfect for families or groups of friends.
Charter and Fees
Depart from Guiyang to Xijiang and Zhaoxing for 4 days and 3 nights. Private car rental costs approximately 1800 to 2500 CNY (sedan, 5 seats), including fuel and tolls. Driver's meals and accommodation are covered by guests. The driver can also serve as a guide, taking you to villages and restaurants not found on navigation apps at no extra cost.
Two people: 4 days and 3 nights, including accommodation, tickets, meals, and private car transport; total cost approximately 5000 to 7000 yuan. A family of three should budget 7000 to 9000 yuan for a comfortable trip.
Two pitfalls to avoid:9 and 10 are peak months; accommodation at Xijiang stilt houses is in high demand, so book at least 15 days in advance. In Zhaoxing, weekend markets offer affordable goods, but arrive early—stalls close by noon.
