Mid-month, I hosted a family of four from Vancouver, Canada, including their parents in their 70s. On day six, the grandmother said, "Let's stop hiking and find a place to soak." I adjusted our itinerary, swapping Xijiang for Xifeng. Two hours later, she stepped out of the hot spring and said, "This is what coming home should feel like."

For overseas Chinese returning to Guizhou, nine out of ten itineraries focus on hiking and waterfalls; few include hot springs. In fact, Guizhou's geothermal resources are far richer than most realize. Xifeng is home to one of the world's top three radon hot springs. With outdoor temperatures around 10°C in November, soaking in 40+°C water offers the most comfortable two hours of the season.

How to Choose Between Three Hot Springs

Xifeng Hot Spring, one hour north of Guiyang by car

Closest to Guiyang, just 80 km via expressway. Water rises from 2,500 meters underground at around 50°C. Tickets: $88 for adults, $69 for children; includes indoor and outdoor pools. Open until 10 PM—perfect for a half-day trip before your flight. Originally a sanatorium, facilities are not brand new. I'll check how many pools are open on the day of visit beforehand.

Shiqian Hot Spring, Tongren, 2 hours 40 minutes by car from Guiyang

Recorded as early as the Wanli era of the Ming Dynasty, locals here bathed in "first-pot water" at 4–5 a.m. The water is 45°C and suitable for both drinking and bathing. Admission is $98, with over 100 hot springs built into the mountainside. Located west of Mount Fanjing, it's a two-hour drive down from the summit—perfect for soaking after hiking.

Jianhe Hot Springs, Qiandongnan — 1 hour by high-speed rail plus 20 minutes by car.

Yang'asha Hot Spring Town, a 4A scenic area featuring Miao and Dong architectural styles. Most rooms include private soaking pools. Admission prices range from ¥128 to ¥159 for adults and ¥58 to ¥68 for children. The water park is closed during winter. The high-speed train from Guiyang to Jianhe Station takes approximately one hour; an additional 20+ minutes by road from the station makes it ideal to combine with visits to Xijiang and Zhaoxing.

MeituShuo ReminderNight boat tickets for Jian River are only available to holders of Qiandongnan local ID cards. Visitors from outside the region cannot purchase them. Verify eligibility before buying, as you may be denied entry at the gate despite seeing a lower price.

Three places where you're likely to lose out

Pitfall 1: "Onsen hotels" booked online may not offer bathing facilities. Some hotel rooms feature bathtubs filled with heated tap water, yet still advertise it as a "private hot spring." A true natural hot spring requires a verified source and proper licensing. Before booking, ask directly: "Is this natural hot spring water or heated tap water?"

Pitfall 2: Saturday afternoons are peak times for local families. After 3 PM on Saturdays, Xifeng and Jianhe pools are filled with local families with children, making the water murkiest. For a quiet experience, choose weekday mornings.

Pitfall 3: The ticket excludes many things.Fish therapy, salt baths, spa services, and card/board games are all additional charges ranging from $30 to $80 per item. Ask upfront which services are included in your admission ticket.

MeituShuo ReminderMost hot springs in Guizhou contain radon and sulfur. Limit each soak to 20 minutes, take breaks by sitting out between sessions, and drink a glass of warm water before and after. Seniors with high blood pressure should consult a doctor first.

How to plan a Guizhou itinerary

For a 5-day itinerary, depart the day before your flight. For a 7-day trip, stay at the foot of Fanjing Mountain on Day 1 and head to Shiqian on Day 2 after descending. For trips longer than 8 days, explore Southeast Guizhou: spend one night in Xijiang, take the high-speed train to Jianhe for hot springs on Day 3, and continue to Zhaoxing on Day 4.

FAQ

Q: Is one day enough for an onsen trip with my parents in November?

Yes. Two to three hours in the hot spring, plus travel and meal time, fits perfectly in one day. For seniors, avoid consecutive days of soaking; alternate with a day for sightseeing.

Q: Can the hot springs be combined with Mount Fanjing?

Answer: Yes. Shiqian is west of Mount Fanjing, about two hours downhill from the summit. Stay at the base of Mount Fanjing, then head to Shiqian for a hot spring soak the next day—it's much more comfortable than reversing the order, as it helps soothe your sore legs after hiking.
